After church last Sunday, we headed out to Kohl’s and stopped for breakfast at Blue Swan Diner on Rt 35 in Oakhurst, a family eatery opened way back in 1974. This classic chrome diner has ample seating, with one side offering booths and the other side featuring four-top tables and six-top rounds. A long dine-in counter abuts the kitchen, with service for a dozen more. On the far side of the diner is a smaller solarium room for those who want a quieter meal. A display case full of cakes gives options, but not so many that you couldn’t choose, like some big Greek diners.

Our waitress Daisy comes over with a smile and is back in a flash with piping hot coffee. After a look at their sprawling diner menu, J orders the Blue Swan Special: two pancakes, two eggs, two bacon and two sausages. She really just wanted pancakes, but we’ve been gone all morning and need to bring home meat to bribe the dog. Her bacon is smoky and delicious; her pancakes are fluffy vanilla pillows. They’re not the best ever (that’s All Seasons Diner pancakes) but they’re still pretty great. Daisy says it’s the most popular item on the breakfast menu.

I order the Huevos Rancheros, made with homemade chorizo. They come with two eggs, sunny, black beans, a crispy tostada, red onion, cilantro, crema, salsa verde drizzle, and crumbly queso fresco cheese. It’s amazing, everything all at once. It’s what I ordered last time we came, and why we returned to review the Blue Swan.

Breakfast is on the table in less than 10 minutes and looks so delicious. And the quality is consistent; it’s just as perfect as on our last weekday visit when the diner was near empty. I adore the meld of flavors and I live for the crunch of the tostada, my all-time favorite tortilla deployment. The waitress Daisy says their chilaquiles, like breakfast nachos, are frequent diners’ absolute fave.

She also adds that afternoon faces are their frappes and their overstuffed Sammie’s, made fresh. We’ll have to return and try them out. After all, they won the 2024 Neighborhood Faves Award from Nextdoor.

We’re full up and asking for the check (plus a tiny to-go box for Fred) in under a half hour, and our delish breakfast with coffee and juice was $38 before tip. Pretty pretty good.
If you’re a fan of nostalgia and homemade chorizo, Blue Swan Diner is worth a visit. Ample parking and back-road routes off Rt 35 make it able to avoid jughandles, the bane of living in New Jersey. There’s also quick and easy pick-up available, if you want a sandwich to go.
