We’re in Brick Township today for a health checkup that runs too long, so we decide to grab lunch at the Brick Finer, a trusty outpost from her youth in nearby Tom’s River.

It’s a little rough navigating the pothole ridden parking lot and it looks a little dated on the exterior. But the interior is a classic chrome diner style with one side of the finer open booths, limited counter seating in the middle, and tables on the left. Their website notes that it has recently be renovated. A big case of cakes sits behind the cashier station.

It’s noon on Thursday so the diners mostly complaining old men waited on by kindly older women. We peruse the not too thick menu as we order soft drinks and lemonade.

The waitress, Beate, comes by and J orders a cheeseburger while I get a turkey club on rye toast with fries: two of the best metrics (besides breakfast) by which to judge any diner.

Slaw and pickles come out with the drinks; 10 minutes later our meals are on the table. J’s burger is huge and very juicy. My TBLT club is loaded with white meat turkey, crispy bacon, and deliciously ripe tomatoes‚—better than I’ve seen at any diner before. Our fries are crispy and even the slaw is good although a bit sweet.

As old men ebb and flow at a nearby eight-top, we eat our lunch and head back out into the world. Not the greatest diner ever, but it’s a solid diner nonetheless, with quick service and good food.

Brick Diner has all the stuff you’d expect from a diner, including a full selection of breakfast items, an impressive array of cold salads, a decent club sandwich and burger assortment, and there are also dinners, although the waitress says don’t bother looking for prime rib, it’s not that kind of place. Maybe just order a nice sandwich or meatloaf platter instead and be happy.

Two lunches with drinks came out to only $33.01, which these days is not a bad price. Thanks for the quick bites, Beate. I’d stop again if I were in the area but it wouldn’t be its own breakfast destination per se. But still, it’s a decent New Jersey chrome diner.

Save a Few Clams
There’s not too much to save at Brick Diner, but Beate lets us know that from 6-11 a.m. on weekdays, all breakfast specials (16 choices under $10) also include free coffee or tea and juice. That’s a not too shabby way to start the day.
